Two indicators, two jobs

Advantage is the battle result being accumulated. Battlefield Adjustment is the percentage that influences army-battle damage and appears on the side that benefits. A commander can change one without necessarily changing the other.

The community formula reference distinguishes the ordinary starting values as follows. These are classic-game values, not measurements from a Steam playtest.

TerrainDefender's initial Advantage modifierInitial Battlefield Adjustment
Field+100%
Town+20+10%
Castle+40+20%

Scripted fights and specific territories can be exceptions. Yamatai's Miko Union town is documented with a much larger starting adjustment, so a table of ordinary terrain is not a universal battle calculator.

Preparation and scouting

The province preparation command adds adjustment for a future battle there. Its effectiveness begins at seven percentage points per use and can be improved by Satisfaction bonuses. Successful scouting also adds a benefit described by the formula reference. The final adjustment is capped at fifty percent in either side's favor.

Before spending several preparation actions, make sure you are preparing the province you will actually fight in. Event battles can have their own rules; a normal province preparation should not be assumed to apply to every scripted encounter.

Read a losing battle correctly

If the result bar is unfavorable, look at damage dealt, damage taken and any advantage-changing skills. If attacks are unexpectedly weak, also inspect terrain, the adjustment percentage and defensive buffs. Raising troop numbers alone may not address the cause.

Our recommended sequence is to scout, inspect the terrain, choose suitable protection and damage roles, then decide whether preparation is worth an action. Keep an earlier save when you are testing a new offensive.

See formation and move budgets for the interface, and Takeda's blitz for a case where several defensive battles must be planned together.
