Read the three budgets on screen

Troop count tells you how much the unit can survive. The small banners show its remaining moves: white are available, red are spent, and yellow preview the cost of the selected action. The central battle clock counts down as units act. These indicators answer different questions; a large stack can still be out of moves.

When the clock expires, the advantage result decides the battle. Destroying every opposing unit is another route to victory. Judge a late action by whether it protects your winning position, not only by whether it produces another casualty.

Put units where their commands work

The classic mechanics page describes Samurai, Ashigaru and Musketeers as front-position attackers. Archers and Ninjas can operate from either position. Inspect the actual unit's skill list before relying on a class generalization, because individual skills can create exceptions.

Use Ashigaru protection deliberately

Ashigaru guard can intercept hits aimed at the protected position; All Guard extends coverage. Some translations call that grouping a row even when the on-screen arrangement looks like a column. Read the skill and inspect the guard percentage rather than assuming every defender protects the whole party.

Guarding also reduces physical damage, but repeated hits can lower the interception chance. A defensive unit is therefore part of a plan, not permanent immunity. Keep valuable or vulnerable units within the protection the skill actually provides.

Before the final action

Hover over the available attack to preview its move cost. Check the clock, the advantage bar and the target's protection. If you are already ahead, a defensive response may preserve more than an expensive attack.

Continue with advantage versus adjustment or dungeon battles, which use different victory conditions.
